First Fridays: February Announcements

Our 2023 First Fridays kick-off featured a fantastic conversation on indigenous food ways featuring Chefs Candace Stock and Edward Rodriguez of BernBaums.

Felicity Merritt, FARRMS
FARRMS has 2023 FARRMS Calendars available! Each month features pictures, recipes, and stories of a different ND farmer. They are also planning for next year's calendar. If you are (or know of) a farmer, local food business, or photographer who would like to be involved in this project please let Felicity know!

Jack Wood, Growing Together Community Gardens
- Join the Tomato Seed Savers Club! They meets on Tuesdays & Thursdays and to date have saved over 229 tomato seed varieties. Check out their Facebook group to learn more.
- The Growing Together Sign-Up Meeting Potluck is March 16 at Gethsemane Cathedral. Bring a dish, enjoy a meal together, and learn more about Growing Together. Details on their Facebook page.

Joe Burgum, Red River Market
Join the Red River Market for their Giving Hearts Day addition of the Red River Market on Saturday, February 4 at West Acres Mall from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Eric Hegg, Refugee Agriculture Partnership Program
The Refugee Agriculture Partnership Program is a program with the goal of providing gardening/farming space for recently resettled refugees in the FM area. They are in the process of starting a brand new community garden plot at Village West Park just North of 13th Ave S and 45th St. They are in our early stages now, but if you are interested in staying up to date on our progress, please sign up to receive a once a month newsletter.

Heart-n-Soul Community Cafe has many events coming up in February including the Red River Market, StartUp Brew. They are also participating in Giving Hearts Day.

Annie Wood - Minnesota State University Moorhead
MSUM's Educational Event Fund, in partnership with Dragon Entertainment Group, Sodexo, and the American Indian Student Association invites you to learn from and dine with Chef Sean Sherman, creator of Sioux Chef!

Chef Sean will be on the MSUM campus Monday, February 6 for a keynote presentation at 3:30 p.m. This will be held in the Comstock Memorial Union in room 105. From there, Chef Sean will be in Kise Dining Hall from 4:30-7:30 p.m. doing a cooking demonstration with samples, as well as a main dish for the night.

Community members are welcome to attend the keynote at no cost and parking is available in the M-5 parking lot outside the Comstock Memorial Union. To attend the cooking demonstration, community members will pay the standard dinner cost to eat in Kise Commons, approximately $12.00

Mary Larson, Cass Clay Food Partners
The CCFP Food Commission is back meeting in-person in 2023 with the next meeting on March 8 at 10:30am at Fargo City Commission Chambers. Also excited to announce 'Coffee with a Commissioner' to increase transparency and accessibility with the greater community. The 1st Coffee with a Commissioner is scheduled for Thursday, February 9 at 8:00am at Twenty Below Coffee in Fargo with Cass Clay Food Commissioner, Arlette Preston. Everyone is welcome!
